The American Red Cross wants your blood — type O negative in particular. The agency said this type of blood is at critically low levels. Type O negative blood is always in high demand because it can be transfused to patients with any blood type, especially in emergency situations. "The American Red Cross is reaching out to eligible blood donors, sponsors and community leaders to ask them to help recruit type O negative blood donations to help make up for this shortfall," said Donna Morrissey, spokesperson for the American Red Cross Blood Services – Connecticut Region. Eligible volunteer blood donors are asked to please call 1 (800) 733-2767 or visit www.redcrossblood.org to find a blood drive and to make appointments.

Forgotten Felines to Hold Pedal For Paws Bike Ride
Old Saybrook, CT (August 24, 2010) – Forgotten Felines, a no-kill shelter for cats in Westbrook, CT, invites individuals and families to participate in Pedal for Paws, a charity bike ride to be held on Saturday, October 2, 2010. The ride offers 10-, 25-, 30-, and 50-mile routes through six picturesque towns along the CT River and shoreline, with the start/finish at the Kathleen E. Goodwin Elementary School in Old Saybrook.
With the ever-increasing numbers of abandoned cats due to job losses and foreclosures, Forgotten Felines’ resources are stretched to their limits. “Pedal for Paws is a new fundraising event that encourages the public to help the shelter care for homeless pets while enjoying our scenic shoreline community with family and friends,” says Debby Adams, a shelter volunteer who co-chairs the event.
Registration for Pedal for Paws is now open. Forms are available for download at http://forgottenfelinesct.org, or riders may register online using www.bikereg.com. The early registration fee is $30 for all riders 12 years of age and older, and includes a ride T-shirt. Registration after September 20th including the day of the ride is $40. Children under 12 ride free. No fundraising by riders is required.
All participants must wear appropriate bike helmets and footwear. The ride will be fully supported, with rest stops and lunch to follow. Pedal for Paws will be held rain or shine. For more information, please call 860-669-1347.
Forgotten Felines, a 501(3)(c) non-profit shelter run entirely by volunteers and supported solely through donations, has been rescuing cats in ten shoreline towns for nearly twenty years. In 2009, the shelter rescued over 300 cats and kittens, including the trapping, neutering, and returning of dozens of feral cats to their colonies to reduce overpopulation. Cats of all ages waiting for a new home live out their lives at the shelter. All proceeds raised through Pedal for Paws will help meet the increasing costs of food, supplies, and veterinary care for these cats until they are placed in new homes.
